Jayapura. Six people remained missing on Tuesday afternoon following the sinking of a speed boat off the coast of Timika, Papua, last week.
Eight people were on board the boat when it departed from Timika, the capital of Mimika district, on March 6.
The boat was headed toward the Agats area in the neighboring district of Asmat when its engine reportedly stopped working.
“Because the engine died, the boat dropped its anchor in the middle of the sea,” Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Pujo Sulistyo said on Tuesday. “The boat flipped over after it was hit by waves, throwing the passengers out into the sea.”
The incident took place on the afternoon of March 7 during high seas, Pujo said.
Two people survived after being rescued by local fishermen, but six others remained missing five days after the boat sank, he said.
Police only learned about the incident from local residents on Tuesday, after which a search and rescue team was immediately sent to the location, Pujo said.
